Minority Education Grants

Are you upset of not being able to go for higher education due to financial reasons? If you are, then throw your frustrations out of your mind and start preparing for higher education. You’ll be glad to know that if you belong to a minority group of any category, you are eligible to receive an education grant from the government.

Government, through educational grants, is trying to help those minority students, who require financial leg-up during adversity.

How do Minority Education Grants Work

Grants are different from scholarships. Grants are awarded on the basis of financial requirements, whereas scholarships are focused more on merit. Educational grants mainly address the challenges faced by underrepresented population of students. Students belonging to ethnic minority category looks out for grants targeted towards Asian, African-American, Native American and Hispanic students. Government tends to be the main sources for funding these grants.

Minority Education Grants Types

You’ll find two types of education grants available:

Ethnic Minority Grants: They are designed for offering assistance to the ones facing ethnic challenges. They include grants for Hispanics and African-American students. These programs are funded with the main goal of diversifying the fields of education and professionalism.

Non-ethnic Minority Grants: They provide aids, according to the needs, to individuals facing challenges mainly due to physical barriers and cannot pursuit their career in educational or professional field. Grants for student having disabilities embrace individuals having physical challenges or learning disabilities (ADD, or autism). Women’s grant allows female students coming from different background for breaking into field and educational program, which has for long been male-centric.

Preferred Minority Grants Sources

Federal & State Government Grant Funds are considered the most proactive for handing out the need-based aid towards low-income and minority students. In each of the cases, there are deep political and socioeconomic purposes. However, the intent is towards build a large and more self-sustaining economy along with nurturing self-sustaining communities.

Popular grants available from the Federal Government include:

  • Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant
  • Pell Grant
  • National SMART Grant
  • Academic Competitiveness Grant

These federal grants remain an imperative tool for a minority student. As per the stats, majority of the educational grant funds go for aiding educations of disabled and minority students. If you’re a minority student coming from a household with low income, Pell Grant is one of the best option for you.

If you do not apply or aren’t qualified for Pell Grants, then the doors to FSEOG, AC Grants and SMART grants are all shut, as they require students to be a recipient of Pell Grants.

Other Sources

Apart from government-based educational grant, you can opt for other resources for your educational grant:

Minority foundations: They always top the list for most grant seekers. Reputed organizations, which include Hispanic College Fund, Bureau of Indian Affairs, American Indian College Fund and United Negro College Fund, provide grants to an ethnic minority student.

Role of FAFSA

Cornerstone for searching any scholarship or grant is the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). You require filling the application and submitting the same to government, public or university programs. Putting off FAFSA can see you risk on missing the deadline for your grant. This may lead to losing an opportunity of getting thousands in dollars of college money free. Remember, even though the standard deadline for Federal FAFSA is June 30, it can vary as per your state. So, always be on the lookout for such opportunities and you will see your dreams flying higher than ever before.
